LODGING
Campgrounds
During busy summer weekends, campgrounds fill up quickly. Plan on arriving early, or making a reservation for applicable sites to ensure you have a place to camp. Please note: The town of Twin Lakes does not have public water, and our local campgrounds are undergoing a water system renovation this season. Bring enough water from home for drinking, dishes, and drowning your campfires. Please keep our campgrounds and dispersed camping areas clean - follow the principles of Leave No Trace so that our forests stay accessible and enjoyable for future generations.
Frequently Asked Questions
Twin Lakes is a very small, old town! We do not have the typical amenities you might expect, so please come prepared by reviewing our FAQ below.
-
Our town and surrounding campgrounds don’t have a public water system, and water access from private wells is limited. As a result, we’re unable to legally provide water to the public. To ensure you stay hydrated / have enough water for camping / dousing your campfire during your visit, we recommend bringing your own water supply.
If you need additional water while here, the Twin Lakes General Store offers a selection of water in gallon jugs, liters, and occasionally in 24-packs of bottled water. For larger refills, the nearest water station is the Leadville Sanitation District, located at 911 Highway 24 in Leadville, CO.
-
Due to our town’s lack of a centralized water treatment system and small septic systems, the businesses in Twin Lakes are unable to support volume of visitors with full restroom facilities. Our town’s public restroom is a well-maintained pit toilet, located behind our Visitor Center, directly across the street from the Twin Lakes General Store.
Additional pit toilets are also available at recreation areas around the lake, including the Red Rooster Boat Ramp, Deception Point, and the Big Mac Fishing Site. -
There are currently no public showers in Twin Lakes. If you don’t feel like an icy lake dip will suffice, you can contact Inn The Clouds Hostelor Mountain Laundry in Leadville.
-
While the Twin Lakes General Store was historically a post office, we no longer have jurisdiction with the United States Postal Service. However, we sell first class, postcard and international stamps, and can ship packages for you. Please note that our mail delivery / pickup is spotty as our “home” post office is in Buena Vista. If you need something mailed quickly, we recommend going to Leadville’s Post Office.

In the summer, our Visitor Center offers trash disposal for a small fee. Otherwise, it’s recommended to bring your trash to Leadville. These businesses allow trash disposal year round. Please! Keep our beautiful home clean, pack out your trash, and follow Leave No Trace principals.
